EDMONTON, Alta.—Aspiring Heavy Equipment Technician apprentices at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) will benefit from a new endowment established in honour of the late Maurice W. McCaig.
The M.W. McCaig Trimac Entrance Bursary was created through a $500,000 gift from the Estate of Maurice McCaig. Beginning in 2026 and continuing in perpetuity, up to 10 students entering NAIT’s Heavy Equipment Technician Apprenticeship program will receive bursaries valued at $2,000 each year.
“Student awards and endowments are vital in recognizing and rewarding the hard work and dedication of our learners,” says Stephen McMillan, Dean, NAIT’s School of Transportation. “This generous contribution will help strengthen Alberta’s transportation workforce and enhance the learning experience within the Heavy Equipment Technician program. We are incredibly grateful to the Estate of M.W. McCaig for their commitment to our students’ success.”
Maurice spent nearly 70 years with Trimac, which was co-founded by his father, and built a career closely tied to the growth and development of the company and the trucking industry.
“Maurice always believed that the heart of the trucking industry is the drivers and mechanics who kept everything moving,” said Jeff McCaig, Chairman of the Board and nephew of Maurice McCaig. “To him, it was honest, meaningful work—and a path to building a good life. He loved engaging with young people and deeply cared about supporting the next generation. We are proud to honour his legacy through this bursary, which we hope will give students a leg up as they work toward creating opportunities for themselves and their families.”
Maurice supported numerous organizations and initiatives throughout his lifetime. The M.W. McCaig Trimac Entrance Bursary will carry that legacy forward by helping future heavy equipment technicians begin their careers in the transportation industry.
