Commitment to Safety

Trimac Transportation has established itself as an industry leader in trucking safety. All Trimac management is committed to a leadership role that brings depth and life to the Company’s motto "Service with Safety". Safety starts at the top with the President. The Safety Policy, Environmental Protection Policy and Quality Policy are under the signature of the President, are reviewed annually and are posted in all work places. Trimac takes an active role in health, safety and environment at the Board of Directors level.

Trimac is an industry leader in trucking safety.

Trimac has focused on safety with all of its resources and has applied all of the quality principles of leadership, organization, a focus on process, measurement, employee involvement and an unswerving drive for results. The Annual Trimac North American Health & Safety Plan outlines the safety programs, initiatives, and ongoing policies required to uphold safety as Trimac’s core value, and support the Trimac Mission Statement with regard to Customer Service, employee contribution & recognition, and financial objectives. The annual Safety Plan is a continuous improvement process that builds upon the successful safety initiatives of prior years and identifies new areas of improvement. The specific safety initiatives are listed under the following 5 categories:

  1. Training
  2. Compliance
  3. Incident investigation (including root-cause analysis and preventive measures)
  4. Communication
  5. Support

The Safety Plan has been prepared based on:

  • Existing and on-going safety programs
  • Regulatory requirements
  • Past and present safety performance
  • Best practices within Trimac and the Industry
  • Customer requirements

Trimac’s safety program is focused on process, measurement and employee involvement to achieve the desired results.

Trimac has endeavored to be proactive, designing safety into equipment, facilities and processes. Trimac’s hiring standards are in excess of industry minimums and much effort is expended at the outset to hire the right individual who fits the Company’s culture and values. Extensive employee training of drivers, mechanics, washrack technicians and all management is viewed as mandatory and safety performance is an integral part of everyone’s ongoing performance appraisal. Management training extends beyond compliance and work procedures, to include "soft skills" such as communication, leadership and conducting effective meetings.

The focus on safety is at the branch level but an extensive support organization exists to support the field. The Senior Vice President, Field Support Services (FSS), reports to the President, and is ultimately responsible for the effectiveness of the Health & Safety program and the operation of the safety related Field Support departments.

The Trimac North American Safety Services & Security department is headed by a Vice-President reporting to the Senior VP (FSS) and has North American responsibility for development and implementation of the Health & Safety plans, safety policy & procedures, training programs and regulatory compliance. The department is comprised of several full-time staff positions including: a Director for Canada, a Director for the United-States, 14 Managers Safety Services located throughout North America, a Regulatory Services Coordinator, a Driver Log auditor, Administrative support staff. The Managers Safety Services are located in all regions and provide direct support to the branches in areas of training, accident investigation, safety meetings, auditing for compliance and dealing with regulatory agencies and customers on safety issues. Branch driver trainers and/or observers are in place at most Trimac branches. They are full-time drivers that also provide hand-on orientation training to new or existing drivers or Independent Contractors.

Other Field Support departments include:

  • Risk and Insurance, which comprises a N.A.Director and a group of claims specialists who handle all processing of accident claims.
  • Human Resource Department, Disability Management group that handle all work related personal injury claims.
  • Human Resource Department, Driver Qualification group that handle all employee files and training records.

Significant resources are committed to the Safety Program. Including the following:

Self-audits are conducted at each branch on a quarterly basis and an independent audit is conducted annually by the Manager Safety Services. In addition, Trimac supports audits by its customers, industry associations and regulatory agencies.

Safety performance is monitored consistently on a company-wide basis with weekly and monthly reports covering all aspects of injury, vehicle incident, product spill/mix activity, roadside inspection. These monthly safety monitors are posted in all work places to ensure that all employees are aware of our ongoing safety performance. Fact-findings are conducted on all incidents by a branch team involving the employee responsible, his peers, other employees in related areas (e.g. maintenance), and management representatives. The focus is on finding root cause and initiating substantive corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Safety conference calls are held in all divisions and regions to heighten awareness and to increase involvement of branch personnel. It also permits the sharing of both problems & corrective actions and best practices.

Safety performance is consistently measured internally. Measurements include:

Injury and vehicle accident frequency & Severity
Product Loss activity
Roadside Inspection results.

Fact-findings are completed on all incidents. These fact-findings are focused on determination of root cause and corrective actions.

Training programs have been rolled out system-wide including defensive driving, product handling stewardship (commodity based), fatigue management, Driver Vehicle Inspection certification, Hours of Service, wheel installer training, etc. Trimac has piloted behaviour- based training and has incorporates this concept in all training activities. Training programs are delivered in numerous manners including instructor led classes, one-on-one coaching, e-learning (computer base interactive modules that allow participants to proceed at their own pace). The training material used has mostly been developed in house and includes manuals, training videos and e-learning modules which are kept current and fresh.

Special safety initiatives includes the production of "In a Heartbeat", a high impact video produced by Trimac to highlight the learning of a fatal accident in which a teenager lost her life This video has been made available to the general public free of charge and has been distributed throughout North America to sensitize all drivers about road safety.

Trimac has a full safety recognition program that includes both individual and branch awards. The awards include both drivers and shop/washrack personnel. The annual President’s Awards recognize the four branches in North America with the best safety results in preventable vehicle incidents in high and low mileage categories.

The President’s Safety award recognizes exceptional safety performance on a branch basis.

Trimac participates in numerous safety organizations, sharing its expertise and looking for opportunities to further enhance its safety leadership position. Trimac has been recognized in both Canada and the United States for its safety achievements in regards to safe workplace and road safety. These include having been a multiple winner of the National Tank Truck Carriers (NTTC) Grand Award for the Competitive Safety contest in the highest mileage category as well as the 2002 Outstanding Performance Trophy. The Canadian Trucking Alliance has also awarded Trimac its top safety award in recognition of its safety programs and performance.
